This post-apocalyptic thriller is quite a sophisticated and original take on the zombie genre. Melanie along with a couple of dozens of other children are held in a military facility where they are taught, monitored and locked up. Unaware as to why she is restrained at gunpoint before being wheeled into lessons with other children, Melanie finds herself thrown out of the only world she knows and soon finds out what happened to everyone else outside the base and who she really is.
I was totally absorbed by this thriller, which deserves to be recognised as more than just another zombie thriller because of the way the science of this fictional disaster is part of the intrigue and because of the depth of questions it asks about humanity as the story progresses.
With characters in whom it is easy to become invested and root for and the innocence of Melanie at the centre of this story, it’s not a story I will easily forget and I can understand why the movie of this book has a lot of buzz behind it. Easy to visualise, this story will have you rooting for the survivors and looking at the infected in a whole new light. A definite must-read for 2016.
