Jack and his mother have been held captive in a room for seven years by a man he knows as Old Nick. Jack was born in this room and his entire world is within these four walls. When his mother feels its a matter of survival for them to escape, Jack is thrust into what he has only known as Outside, can mother and son navigate the larger world?
The narrative in this disturbing and affecting book is told solely from five year old Jack’s point of view, which makes it hard to initially read and comprehend, but once you adjust to the narrative, you do become more invested in Jack and his life.
Not the easiest novel to read, Room challenges your perception of the world as seen through the eyes of a five year old.
Right about the time I read this novel, I read the book by Jessica DuGard’s captivity. It was just as difficult to read. ~nan

I must look that one up.

This book really moved me when I read it in 2012. Lost count of how many times I cried.
Can’t wait to see the movie!

I think seeing it all through a child’s eyes makes it very emotive.

It was a good read for the second half, I thought it was ok, but other thrillers have got to me more.

I read Room a few years back. Such a brilliant read, and so disturbing. Looking forward to seeing the film.

I’m late to the party with this one, but it will be interesting to see how it translates to the big screen.

It was hard to start off with and I felt the first half of the book was a bit laboured, but it gets more interesting in the second half.

I too found the first half a little difficult to comprehend. It went slow in the beginning but in the end I was an emotional wreck.

It seemed deliberately static compared to the second half.

True that. The events were cyclic. It felt monotonic during the first half.

I think we were supposed to feel similarly to what it felt being locked in a room, but I think it overplayed the point.
