In a town in Connecticut, June finds herself the only survivor of a house fire that wipes out her family and boyfriend, Luke. Small town prejudices and gossips have already decided that Luke is to blame for the fire and deaths, based on his previous incarceration and his mixed race. However, the truth behind that unfortunate night and the secrets hidden by those who knew Luke, June’s daughter, Lolly, Lolly’s fiance, Will and June’s ex-husband, Adam surface in this mesmerisingly circuitous and intriguing story.
I found this book hard to read for the first 20%, but once I had acclimated to the way the story was being told and got to know the main characters, it was impossible to put down. There is so much in this book, intrigue, family secrets, parental angst, grief and a mysterious house fire by the time I was halfway through I knew I was reading something truly insightful of human nature ad special.
This is the sort of book that stays with you and changes you. it’s not an easy read but the challenge is rewarding. This novel is probably one of my best reads of all time.
I’ve been hearing this title quite often in the past weeks. Maybe it’s time to pick it up.
